Con Edison – Can they Demand Payment at my Place of Business?

VERY unlikely. While Con Edison will send multiple warnings and attempt to work with customers on payment plans, they do not typically come in person to turn off power for non-payment; they disconnect service remotely.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:
  • Warnings and Payment Plans:

Con Edison sends multiple warning letters over a 90-day period before disconnecting service, and they also call customers and may visit to discuss payment plans.

  • Remote Disconnection:

Con Edison can disconnect power remotely, using smart meters, for non-payment.

  • Final Termination Notice:

Before disconnecting service, Con Edison must send a Final Termination Notice, allowing 15 days for the customer to resolve the issue.

  • Proper Shut-Off Procedures:

In New York State, utility companies must follow proper shut-off procedures, including sending a Termination Notice at least 15 days before disconnection.

  • Don’t Disconnect on Certain Days:

Utilities cannot be shut off on Fridays, public holidays, the day before a holiday, or during the week between and including Christmas and New Year’s Day.

  • Door-to-Door Scams:
Be wary of anyone claiming to be from Con Edison who comes to your door, and always ask for credentials.
