Sugar Hill Neighborhood Legacies Walking Tour

May 3 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

During the Harlem Renaissance, the area surrounding the Morris-Jumel Mansion was where some of the biggest names in music, art, literature, politics, and philosophy thrived. The synergy of the African American community in the Sugar Hill neighborhood during this era has impacted American culture in lasting ways. You may have noticed that various buildings in the neighborhood are marked by vibrant purple plaques highlighting the groundbreaking individuals who lived there, placed by the organization While We Are Still Here, to preserve African American history. Join Duke Ellington’s “Crown Jewel of Sugar Hill”, aka the Morris-Jumel Mansion, and While We Are Still Here for a walking tour of the neighborhood to experience it through the stories of the many legends who made this their home, like Paul Robeson, Sonny Rollins, Langston Hughes, Faith Ringgold, and more!
